Walking through the streets of Ravenna during our art week last April we noticed a particular type of tile hanging beside doorways and shop fronts. They all had the same format: a ceramic frame enclosing a flower made with mosaic with the writing “Ravenna, Cittá Amica delle Donne” “Ravenna,Women-Friendly City”. Each tile showed a different flower.
The Flowers of Ravenna – Women-Friendly City ’is a project by Linea Rosa with the collaboration of ICDM Inetrnational Centre for the Documentation of Mosaics of MAR Ravenna Art Museum and the CNA National Confederation of Artisans. The project is sponsored by the Municipality of Ravenna. Linea Rosa is a voluntary association active since 1991 in support and protection of women who are or were victims of violence. The project involves the mosaicists of Ravenna in the realisation of a concrete symbol testifying the attention of Ravenna towards women in distress. The tiles represent both a symbol Ravenna’s citizens identify with and a welcoming sign for all the women visiting the city.’
